Despite an outstanding high school career that included four IHSA state track titles, one cross country championship, and the WCIA 3 Female Athlete of the Year Award, Lincoln native Becca Heitzig initially struggled with self-doubt at the collegiate level. She admitted to experiencing imposter syndrome when surrounded by top-tier athletes, a feeling that lingered during her first year and a half at Iowa State.

After the 2025 cross country season, Heitzig decided a change was needed. She transferred to Illinois State, and within five months, the sophomore has found a new rhythm. “Having coaches and people who believe in you, and knowing you can achieve great things — it makes all the difference,” she said. That belief has translated into record-breaking performances on the track.
Heitzig now holds two Redbird program records: 4:14 in the 1500 meters and 2:46 in the 1,000 meters. She also won the Missouri Valley Conference indoor title in the 800 meters. Head track and field coach Jeff Bovee praised her as “one of the most standout performers we’ve brought to Illinois State in my 20 years here.”
Heitzig credited her training partners and supportive coaching staff for her growth, noting that she no longer ties her identity solely to the sport. “Making sure I have a life outside of running has helped me have fun and perform better,” she said. “Everyone here pushes each other in workouts, and that has been key to my success.”
