On the opening day of the May Grand Sumo Tournament, Yokozuna Hoshoryu (26, from the Tatsunami stable) was defeated by Komusubi Takayasu (36, from the Tanogawa stable) via a crushing uwatenage (overarm throw). The bout marked a significant upset as the sport’s top-ranked wrestler fell to the veteran komusubi.

The Japan Sumo Association officially released the match video on its YouTube channel. This is the first bout of the tournament, setting the tone for the 15-day competition held in Tokyo. Hoshoryu, aiming to solidify his yokozuna status, was unable to overcome Takayasu’s powerful technique and ring generalship.

For full daily results and updates throughout the tournament, fans can visit the official tournament schedule on the Sumo Association’s website. The “Today’s Best Bout” series will be released daily via the association’s official channels.
