San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson erupted in a rare postgame outburst, directly accusing officials of ignoring fouls committed against rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama.
While acknowledging that “physical play is a given in the NBA,” Johnson described the current officiating as “disgusting.” He pointed to escalating pushes, collisions, and hand-checking, met with increasingly silent whistles. “We don’t complain, we just play,” Johnson said. “We honestly don’t give a damn—excuse my language. But at some point, Victor deserves to be protected. If he’s not, he’s going to have to protect himself.”
It marked the strongest critique from Johnson since taking the helm. Despite emerging as the league’s next marquee star, Wembanyama has faced relentless physical defense this season without receiving a commensurate number of free throws. Johnson’s message was clear: either the league enforces stricter defensive rules through consistent calls, or Wembanyama may be forced to respond with equal force.
The Spurs organization, traditionally known for avoiding complaints, has now put the issue front and center. Whether this public pressure will shift officiating standards or draw league scrutiny remains to be seen.
