While acknowledging that “physical play is a given in the NBA,” Johnson described the current officiating as “disgusting.” He pointed to escalating pushes, collisions, and hand-checking, met with increasingly silent whistles. “We don’t complain, we just play,” Johnson said. “We honestly don’t give a damn—excuse my language. But at some point, Victor deserves to be protected. If he’s not, he’s going to have to protect himself.”
