SC Freiburg has officially announced the early contract extension of Berkay Yilmaz, who returns to the club after a two-year loan spell at 1. FC Nürnberg. The Turkish U21 international impressed during his time in the 2. Bundesliga, earning himself a new deal that runs beyond 2028—reportedly for three additional years.
Yilmaz, who is versatile on the left flank and can also play in central midfield, has recorded one goal and seven assists this season for Nürnberg under coach Miroslav Klose. Since August 2024, he has contributed to nine goals in 58 appearances for the second-division side. His market value has soared tenfold during his time in Nuremberg, now standing at €5 million.

“Berkay adapted very well to the 2. Bundesliga and showed a good balance between offensive involvement and defensive responsibility. He has a big heart and identifies completely with SC Freiburg—that’s a solid foundation to work on details together. We look forward to it. Our thanks also go to the club for the excellent cooperation during this loan,” said sporting director Klemens Hartenbach.
Yilmaz added: “I had a great time in Nuremberg, and I’m very grateful for that. But it was always my plan and my wish to succeed at Freiburg. So today is a big day for me. I’m really looking forward to wearing the SC shirt at the Europa-Park-Stadion and celebrating successes together.”
