Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered measures to widely involve citizens in practicing sambo. The directive was published on the official internet portal of legal information. 
The order is timed to the 90th anniversary of sambo’s recognition as a sport in 2028. Putin also instructed the government to establish an organizing committee for events dedicated to this anniversary. Regional authorities were recommended to take steps to promote sambo among youth and other age groups, as well as to further develop the sport in Russia.
Putin has practiced sambo and judo since childhood. In 1973, he earned the title of Master of Sports in sambo, and two years later in judo. In 1998, he was named an Honored Coach of Russia in sambo. In July 2025, Putin described sambo and judo as his main hobbies.
