Belgian tennis player Alexander Blockx has made a stunning breakthrough at the Madrid Masters, reaching his first ATP Masters 1000 semifinal after a series of impressive victories over three top-20 opponents. The 2023 Australian Open junior champion had struggled to find consistent form on the ATP Tour until this week.

Blockx started his Madrid campaign in the qualifying rounds, winning four straight matches to reach the main draw. After a slow start against Chilean qualifier Alejandro Tabilo in the first round, he rallied from a set down to win in three sets. In the second round, he again came from behind to defeat American Brandon Nakashima in another three-set battle.

The 19-year-old then faced his toughest test yet: third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime. Despite the Canadian’s strong form, Blockx took the first set in a tense tiebreak and then cruised to a 6-3 second set, earning his first top-10 win. In the quarterfinals, he faced defending champion Casper Ruud of Norway and dominated from start to finish, winning 6-4, 6-4 to become the first Belgian man since 1990 to defeat a defending champion and reach a Masters semifinal.
Blockx has shown remarkable resilience and fighting spirit, overcoming deficits against seasoned players and proving that his junior success was no fluke. With three top-20 wins in a row, he has announced himself as a serious contender on the ATP Tour. The tennis world will be watching closely to see how far he can go in Madrid.
